This Labor Day Weekend, I’m holding town meetings in Springfield, Newport, St. Johnsbury, Brattleboro, and Middlebury. I hope you can join me to discuss the historic $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill I am currently working on. If passed, I truly believe it will be the most consequential piece of legislation for working people, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor since FDR and the New Deal of the 1930s.

This Wednesday, I’m partnering with the Vermont Energy & Climate Action Network to host a town meeting on the federal climate investments in the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill. I want to hear from Vermont’s town energy committees, as well as Vermonters who are working to address the climate crisis, about how we can best use federal dollars to support the important work happening in our state.

Last Friday, I visited senior centers, summer programs, health centers, recreation and transportation areas, and a farmers market in Plainfield and Hardwick. To the Vermonters I met with: the very best part of my job is sitting down with you, learning about your work, and hearing your thoughts about the future of our country.

You’re likely hearing a lot about the budget bill we’re working on, which I believe is the most significant piece of legislation for working people since the Great Depression. As Budget Committee Chairman, I want to give you an update on what’s in the bill and how it meets your needs.

There are too many families in Vermont and throughout this country, who are struggling to raise their kids. In fact, shamefully, the United States has one of the highest rates of childhood poverty of any major country on earth. That is why I am delighted to inform you that, as a result of the American Rescue Plan passed several months ago and signed into law by President Biden, historic action has been taken to make it easier for moms, dads, and caregivers to raise their children. One of the key provisions of that legislation is a major expansion of the Child Tax Credit.
