Many of you are rightly concerned by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I wanted to take a few minutes to discuss this terrible conflict.
As you know, the bad news is that the cost of home heating is soaring. The good news is that, thanks to a major increase in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan, Vermont is getting a record $49 million – more than double our usual amount – to help you pay for heating bills, furnaces and fuel tank replacements or repairs. This means that more Vermonters than ever before will get the help they need from this program, which is known as LIHEAP.
Whether it’s summer, winter, spring or fall, Vermonters enjoy the outdoors. In the midst of our long and cold winters, one of the outdoor pleasures for many Vermonters is ice fishing. Recently, my team went out to Lake Bomoseen and Lake St. Catherine to hear from some ice fishing enthusiasts about why they love the sport.
I want to hear about the challenges you’re facing, and what the federal government can do to address the needs of young people. We will be speaking with middle school students at 6:30 p.m. and our discussion with high school students will begin at 7:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join for the entire event.
Last week, I asked you to tell me about your favorite country store. I could not believe the overwhelming response we received. Many of these comments were very moving, and reaffirmed to me how much country stores mean to Vermonters and our sense of community. There were just too many responses to print them all, but I thought you would enjoy reading some of them.
It has been a difficult couple of years for all of us, but especially for young people like you. Given the challenges you and your fellow students have faced, I want to hear directly from you about how we begin to address those challenges and move forward together. Join me for a virtual student town meeting on Wednesday, February 16, to discuss the issues on your mind these days, the challenges you’re facing, and what the federal government can do to address the needs of young people.
