U.S. Coast Guard Station Holds Ice Rescue Drills in Burlington

Crews at Burlington’s U.S. Coast Guard Station held ice rescue drills Friday morning. The Coast Guard has had a station on Burlington’s lakefront since 1948, when just four people manned the station on a seasonal basis. Since then, the crew has grown and the mission has expanded to include search and rescue and enforcement of laws and treaties. “”Anytime that we get in the water or anytime that the victim gets in the water, it makes the urgency of the situation go up pretty drastically,” Petty Officer Jason Balmer told WCAX.  “The weather is our biggest concern.” The Boston-based commander of the U.S. Coast Guard First District and Maj. Gen. Steven Cray of the Vermont National Guard were on hand Feb. 17 to observe the drills.
