NEWS: Sanders Statement on Joining the Senate Finance Committee

WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today released the following statement on joining the Senate Finance Committee for the 119th Congress:

I’m excited to become a member of the Senate Finance Committee. While it will be extremely difficult to pass any meaningful pro-working class legislation under the Republican-controlled Congress, I will be able to play a more hands-on role in a number of important areas, including:

Medicare: We need to stop the privatization of Medicare. We need to expand Medicare to cover dental, hearing, vision, and home health care. We need to understand that health care is a human right and move toward Medicare for All.

Social Security: We need to stop all Republican efforts to cut Social Security. We need to expand Social Security benefits and the long-term solvency of the program by lifting the cap on taxable income so that the wealthy pay their fair share into the system.

Tax Policy: We need to stop Trump’s plan to give more tax breaks to the rich. At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, we must demand that the wealthiest people in this country and the largest corporations start paying their fair share of taxes.

Fair Trade: We need fair trade policies that benefit the working class, not just CEOs and Wall Street billionaires. No more unfettered trade deals that make it easier for corporations to shut down factories in America and ship jobs to low-wage countries like China and Mexico.
