WASHINGTON, May 24 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement on the nomination of Allison Macfarlane to chair the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

“By all accounts Dr. Macfarlane has the qualifications and credentials to lead the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. I believe we need someone who is dedicated to safety reforms and openness at the NRC, and who understands that the commission’s role is to be a strong safety regulator and not simply a supporter of the nuclear power industry.

“Based upon her record and experience, I believe Dr. Macfarlane can be a strong chair for the NRC. In the coming weeks, I look forward to evaluating her record and views.”
